Small Notgeld Of Waldenburg: 2 Pfennig (Waldenburg, 1920)

This small Notgeld represents the 2nd denomination of a 2-piece set issued by the city of Waldenburg. This series represents an earlier phase of Notgeld. Utilizing a simple cardboard backing, printed over with black ink. Giving them an appearance similar to food vouchers, although differ in purpose. Notably this Notgeld is double-sided, as opposed an earlier single-sided design.

Observe

The observe is simple and practical, featuring wrap-around text. The center is a large number "2", flanked by pfennig signs (Pf.). Below the text lists the voucher as issued by the city of "Waldenburg". The right and left of the wrap-around text are incorporated by number "2"s on the corners. When read together it list vouchers "2 Pfennig" value.

Notably the upper and lower text feature split text. When read together they inform the bearer "this voucher is meant to be horded". Owning to its Notgeld nature, as its a form of deferred payment. Due to shortages of available currency.

Unlike some later Notgeld an exchange day or expiration date is not provided. Traditionally these dates would have been announced via local newspaper.

Reverse

The reverse center features a cartoon depicting a man sitting with a sack. On the floor there is small tabs, the one's in the foreground feature number 2's. Thus paying homage to the observe's "this voucher is meant to be horded" text. The voucher's printer is listed at the man's left foot, although is illegible.
