A Boat Trip On The Hannover Riviera: 50 Pfennig (Hannover, 1921)

This small Notgeld represents the 2nd denomination of a 4-piece series issued by the City of Hannover's Chamber of Commerce. This short series features the landmarks of Hannover. Notably the set features 2 variants for each denomination. These variants differ by their use of the word "Pfennig" or the (now) antiqued "Pfennigen". (To pay tribute to this note's art, it will be reviewed reverse first)

Observe

The reverse's center features an illustration of boat trip, on the historic Hannover Riviera. The illustration shown is titled the "Leinepartie" (Leine Party). Named after the Leine River, who's water feeds the many waterways throughout Hannover. Unfortunately many of these river-side buildings have not survived to modern times. As many were destroyed in bombing raids, during the Second World War (1939-1945). The illustration's artist credit (E.W. Bailee) is listed at the lower left.

The note's main text is split above and below the illustration. This text simply translates to "Voucher for 50 pfennigs", listing the note's value. This is further reinforced by 2 number "50"s on the left and right borders. The border art above and below the "50"s represent different aspects of labor.

The left section features a hammer/compass (top) and anchor. Representing industry and naval workers. While the right section features a Staff of Aesculapius (top) and wheat (bottom). Representing medicine and agriculture. The note's printer (J.C.KÖNIG & EBHARDT IN HANNOVER) is listed at the footer.

Observe

The observe is primarily covered in text and a rudimentary border. The note's series (M) is located toward the upper left, followed by a red-inked serial number (088975). Notably the note's serial number is backed by tightly packed "bars", as a simple anti-counterfeit measure. The note's text begins to the right of the serial number and extends downward.

The note's text can be divided into 3 distinct sections. The first section informs the bearer the voucher is redeemable for 50 Pfennigs, paid by the Hanover Camber of Commerce. While the second section informs the bearer, that the voucher will lose it's value 3 months after being recalled. The final section is the note's issue date, "1 July 1921". Followed by 3 signatures representing the Hanover Camber of Commerce. Thus notarizing the note as legitimate.
