Notes Of Frankfurt Am Main: 50 Pfennig (Frankfurt, 1917)

Updated: Jan 16, 2022

This Great War-era (1914-1918) Notgeld was issued by the City of Frankfurt Am Main. To our current understanding it does not belong to a known series. Although it can often be seen paired with a 25 Pfennig valued notgeld. Which has a somewhat similar design, although was issued on the 3 November 1919.

Observe

The observe is somewhat advance for the period is was issued. More so given that it served as form of deferred payment, rather than a central currency. The underprint a light blue fractal pattern, over printed by a large green cross. Inside the vertical section of the cross is micro text, is reads (tans.) "City of Frankfurt am Main", in repeated sequence.

The title declarers the note as a 50 pfennig voucher, issued by the City of Frankfurt am Main. The text below is a notification to the bearer. It outlines the note will be redeemed at the Frankfurt city treasury. With a future expiration date to be publicly declared.

Further below is the note's issue date, (trans.) "1 May 1917". Besides this issue date is signature from the city magistrate. Besides each of these sections, are large number "50"s. Reinforcing the note's 50 Pfennig value. To the far left is a vertical serial number, it reads "D No 166638 *". The red ink of the serial number is printed above the underprint.
